They brought chairs, pillows, blankets and their appetite to the new Buddy’s Pizza in Woodhaven on Thursday, and they were rewarded for their dedication.

Fans of the pizza restaurant camped out for hours to be among the first 100 customers at the restaurant at 21611 Allen Road.

And their efforts got them a coupon good for one free pizza every month for a year, compliments of their new Buddy’s.

Along with that perk, any military veteran who visits the restaurant until Sept. 8 will receive a free four-square cheese pizza.

A trio of ladies who ate there together Wednesday evening enjoyed their meal so much they decided to stick around to be the first in line for the giveaway in the morning.

“It was their first time eating at Buddy’s,” said Joelle Kruczek, an assistant account executive.

Kruczek said she even saw a woman in her secured spot in line sleeping while waiting for her free pizza gift certificate.

There was plenty of excitement generated from those who were lucky enough to get a spot in the top 100.

She has been seeing that kind of anticipation for the past several weeks building on social media since the news began to spread that the restaurant was opening in Woodhaven.

According to the company executive, people have commented that they have been waiting a long time for this, and that Downriver has needed a Buddy’s Pizza.

One person in line who will receive free pizza for being a fan of the franchise and walking through the door as customer No. 63 said he was impressed with how organized Buddy’s coordinated everything, and with the size of the ribbon cutting crowd.

The ribbon stretched from nearly one end of the business to the other and involved city officials, representatives from the restaurant and avid fans.

Woodhaven Mayor Patricia Odette and management from Buddy’s cut the ribbon to cheers from the growing crowd.

The staff was commended for doing a good job making everyone feel welcome while anticipating a tasty lunch.

The new restaurant is approximately 7,000-square-feet with room for 200 guests, including 25 seats on an outdoor patio.

The space features design elements from its roots, taken from the original Detroit Buddy’s Pizza that was located on Six Mile and Conant.

In addition to serving a variety of Buddy’s original Detroit-style pizzas, the restaurant features a broad menu – including gluten-free pizza and a selection of craft brews.
